Adam turned four today and I am still trying to figure out where the time went. Happy birthday little dude. Your Daddy and I love you so much more than you will ever know and are so blessed to be your parents. Thank you for being such a kind, sweet, funny boy and for being such a wonderful big brother to Luke and Maggie. You are truly awesome.

Eggbert & Adam
Adam’s thoughts on his sister:
- He cries a lot and he’s sometimes hungry (we’re working on him using “she” for girls).
- Maggie’s favorite clolor is pink. My favorite clolor is green.
- I lub her.
- He wears hair bows.
- I like to call her Eggbert, because I just do.
(He just started occasionally referring to her as Maggie – instead of Eggbert – this week.)

Luke brought Maggie a hat this morning. She was not impressed.
So he decided to try to annoy entertain his brother instead. He followed him around playing the drums for him. Adam was not impressed and kept trying to get away from him. Finally he turned to Luke and yelled, “No Luke! This isn’t a marching band!”
Adam did try to console Maggie while she was crying earlier though. He made up a song for her when she stared to fuss. “Don’t cry little Eggbert, don’t even start to cry. Don’t cry little Eggbert, don’t cry.” It was a nice song, but Adam pronounces the letter “c” like a “t” some of the time. So his song ended up sounding very demotivating “don’t try little Eggbert…” All kidding aside though, it was really sweet and made me a proud mama.
I think her big brother’s song definitely helped though. It wasn’t long before Eggbert, I mean Maggie, was back to her happy little self.
Mad for Plaid
This morning I was helping Adam get ready for church and he picked out a plaid shirt to wear. While I was looking for some shorts to go with it, he picked out a pair of his own. He told me it’s his favorite shirt and favorite shorts and he wanted to wear them together. I was trying to sneakily convince him to change one or the other when Dave came upstairs to “help”.
Even Maggie got in on the double plaid.
Don’t worry, she changed (and so did Dave and Adam). I did tell Adam it was okay to wear all plaid if he wanted to, but when Dave changed in to jeans Adam decided he wanted to too.
Luke also wore plaid (we like our plaid here apparently).
And forget about left feet, Luke has two rights – or maybe he just couldn’t decide which pair of fireman boots to wear.
Left, Right, Left
This morning the kids and I went to a parade. We sat with a bunch of friends right in front of a playground and so they had a blast running around before and after the parade.
Adam actually gave this clown a high-five. It surprised the heck out of me because I never would have thought he’d go anywhere near him (I sure wouldn’t – no offense Mr. Clown, I’m sure you’re a really nice guy).
Dave didn’t watch the parade with us, because he was a part of it. There was a steady chorus of “Hi Daddy!” from our little area of spectators as soon as they rounded the corner.
Adam told us later that he didn’t really see daddy because they were all wearing the same camouflage (I added an arrow in case you’re having the same problem). He told Dave that next year he should get a different uniform so that he can find him better.
We all had a lot of fun though. The boys ended up with a bag full of candy, a beach ball, and a balloon. I did have to chase Sherman out of the road once (he was all about that candy), but we ended up with three very tired and happy little kids.
A Newborn Tree
Adam was just singing, “The on Earth, the on Earth waves, on Earth came a newborn tree” to the tune of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. I tried to correct him and teach him the proper lyrics, and he told me, “You don’t know the words to this song. I know the words. You used to know the words when you were a kid, but you are a grown-up now and don’t know them anymore”.
“Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.” – from ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Maine Vacation – Where we stayed
The Sunday after the fourth of July, Dave, Maggie, Stacy, Rob, and I drove out to Portland, Maine for a vacation. This is a picture of the house we stayed in. We rented the ground floor apartment for the week. It was a lot more fun (and actually cheaper) than staying in a hotel would have been.
The house was gorgeous. It had an incredible view of the water and was beautifully decorated. On a tour we took around the city the driver stopped in front of our house (not realizing that we were staying there) and told us that two years ago the house sold for 2.3 million dollars. Crazy.
It worked out perfectly for us. It had two master bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It also had a full kitchen with anything you could possibly need, a washer and dryer, and the best front porch.
The front porch was my favorite part. I think it was Stacy’s too. She spent a good chunk of time out there rocking and reading.
Adam’s 4 Year Portraits
I took Adam to get his pictures taken this morning. I still can’t believe he’s going to be four in nine days! Here are the three we liked best and had put on the CD.
And here are the rest of them.
It was really hard to decide which three to pick. I actually called them when I got home and had them change two of the ones I originally chose. It’s tough narrowing it down with such a cute kid!
This little lady is ridiculously cute.
Doctor, Doctor, give me the news
Maggie and Luke had doctor’s appointments at the same time on Tuesday. I thought it was a great idea – get them both over with at the same time. Turns out, it was a horrible idea.
Luke started flipping out as soon as I took his shoes off. The nurse came in to measure and weigh him and you would have thought it was some new form of torture. When it was Maggie’s turn, Luke went straight for the door. This meant he was in the perfect position for the doctor to hit him with it when he opened it.
It was a bit of a disaster.
It wasn’t made any easier by the fact that Luke hates our pediatrician (I have no idea why) and cried the whole time he was in the room. He calmed down once the doctor left, but wasn’t too pleased when the nurse came back with their shots (Luke got one and Maggie got two). Then we had to go over to the lab so Luke could have some blood drawn. Thankfully Maggie fell asleep (even through her brother’s screams).
It was exhausting. I’m not sure I’ll ever schedule two kids for appointments at the same time again – or at the very least I won’t attempt to take them alone.
The good news is both of them are healthy and growing like weeds. Luke was 36.25 inches tall (in the 85th percentile for height) and weighed 27 pounds 13 ounces (43rd percentile for weight).
The nurse measured Maggie’s length, but must not have added it to the computers, because it wasn’t on my printout and they didn’t have the information when I called back later (it’s not really important, I was just curious). She weighed in at 10 pounds 7 ounces and the doctor was pleased with her weight gain. Last appointment she was in the 12th percentile and this time she was in the 23rd.
Maggie goes back in two months for another checkup. Luke doesn’t have to go back until he’s three. Hopefully he won’t mind that one too much – he won’t be due for any shots at least.
