Incredibly Interesting I Week

Last week was “I Week” in our house. It tied in nicely that Dave brought home ice cream on Wednesday. Poor Adam had to work for his treat though.

When I saw Dave walk in with ice cream I went downstairs and printed out this observation sheet for Adam to fill out.

He didn’t seem to mind a little homework before his snack though.

Here are some of the other interesting “I” things we did last week.

Adam made an igloo. I originally had planned on having him cut strips of white paper to make the blocks of ice, however I think scissors are a bit beyond his skills for right now. It would probably also help if we knew for sure if he was right or left handed. So instead I cut the paper and he used the glue stick to attach it.

We also did a couple of fun counting activities. One where he had to roll a die and count the pips (did you know that’s the technical term for the spots on dice?) and then color in the corresponding number on an inch worm.

The inchworm had twelve segments so I was able to use the numbers 1-6 twice each. He was allowed to pick whatever colors he wanted.

He also had another activity where he had to count the number of holes on a leaf and match it to the inchworm with the right number on it.

He liked that one a lot and would pretend the inchworms were munching on the leaves when he put them in their place.

Then I asked him to put the inchworms in order. He insisted on doing it from 10 to 1, instead of 1 to 10.

I think Adam’s favorite activity this week was making inchworms. He knew exactly who he wanted to make them for and chose the colors accordingly.

Once the inchworms had dried he decided which ones would get big googly eyes and which ones would get smaller ones.

He was very proud of his fleet of inchworms and was quick to correct me each time I mistakenly referred to them as caterpillars. Luke was happy to play with the puff balls too (once he realized you can’t eat them). I gave him a handful of them and an ice cube tray from the dollar store. He played for a while putting a puff ball in each spot, dumping them out, and then doing it again.

Of course there were lots of tangrams, dot-to-dots, and color-by-numbers this week as well. Adam never gets bored with them.

He insists that ice skater is really Aunt Stacy. And no, he didn’t screw up making the skates purple instead of white – I changed the color code because he really does not like using white crayon on white paper (I can’t say I blame him).

So that was “I Week” in a nutshell. It was also the first week we got to use our new magnetic white board to house Adam’s work. We picked it up at Target on clearance ($2.50 – couldn’t pass that up!). And it is working really well for us. Adam insists that most of his work live in his desk, but I’ve been able to convince him to let me show off a few pieces.

That’s an iguana above the igloo. I wanted to name him Izzy, but Adam decided his name is “Adam”. “To why Adam is a nice name” – can’t argue with that.

15 Month Checkup

The timing of Luke’s stitches really was the better case scenario. Best case scenario would have been no stitches at all, but since he did have to get them, having it be the day after he and Adam had their pictures done was pretty fortuitous. It also just so happened that he already had a check up scheduled for the day he needed to get his stitches out.

Dave took Adam to the doctor while I stayed home with Adam (he was napping). The first stitch came out easily, the second stitch was more of a problem though. It was tighter than the first and partially hidden by the scab over his cut, it also had some of the glue on it that they had originally used to try to close the cut. Luke was not impressed. He also got two shots today (part of his check up, not related to his head).

Dave felt bad for poor Luke and stopped and picked up ice cream on the way home.

I definitely think the ice cream helped.

Firetruck Jammies

Here are the new firetruck jammies that Adam told the photographer about.

These pictures were taken that day – which is why Luke’s forehead is stitch-less.

Adam has been a bit obsessed with firemen lately and was thrilled when I gave him his new pajamas. He was even more excited when he realized that Luke has the same ones.

Horribly Horrible H Week

Last week was “H Week” here and I had planned on writing a big recap of all the fun things we did however, H Week got cut short thanks to a trip to the hospital after Luke hurt his head.

The boys were playing together Friday morning – running around and laughing like the wild children they are – and Adam tripped. On his way to to the ground Adam crashed in to Luke, and Luke crashed in to the DVD stand. One of the handles on the DVD stand cut into Luke’s forehead.

I called Dave and thankfully he was able to come home right away. There was no doubt that Luke needed more medical care than a kiss from mama to make it better, so we took him to the emergency room.

They first tried to glue the cut shut, but that didn’t work. So Luke ended up with two stitches instead. It was not a fun day for him.

Adam, on the other hand, declared it the best day ever and asked if maybe sometime Luke could hurt his head again so we can go back to the hospital. Apparently having Daddy come home from work, getting to talk the ear off of Luke’s very nice nurse, and a happy meal for lunch adds up to a good day for Adam.

I do have some of our “H” work to share with you. We started out the week by making a horse.

We built a house (it’s from an Easter kit I bought on clearance years ago – Adam didn’t seem to mind though).

Adam colored a picture of Humpty Dumpty.

And then we cut it in to pieces so he could practice putting Humpty Dumpty “back together again”.

I had Adam line up a bunch of hippos by size.

And there were more tangrams too. The “shape puzzles” are definitely one of Adam’s favorite activities.

There were also lots of dot-to-dot and color by number pages (more Adam favorites). And H Week wouldn’t have been complete without Hank the Hippo in a hat. Of course once Hank had a hat Adam insisted he needed a watch, shirt and pants as well.

I would have been happier about H week without the field trip to the hospital. Luke seems to be feeling fine and the stitches aren’t slowing him down at all, which is good (even if it does mean I cringe a little more than normal every time he runs near a table or dives off of the couch). Unfortunately, considering how active my two crazy boys are I seriously doubt that will be our last trip to the ER.
